Plenty of equipment carries nothing but a mechanical gauge, with no communications port. Instead of replacing the equipment or rewiring the plant, a camera is added that looks at the dial.
You mark three points on the dial and the system reads off what the needle is pointing at. Every reading comes with the evidence for it, checkable on the image itself.
